The Scale of the Fake Problem in Nepal
Nepal has no authorised Nike retail presence. That means every pair sold locally either comes through an official import channel (rare) or a grey market. The grey market is flooded with Chinese-manufactured "Class A" replicas that pass basic visual inspection but fail on materials, sole durability, and resale value. Telling the difference matters — both financially and for your comfort.
Step 1 — Check the SKU on the Tongue Label
Every authentic Nike has a style code on the tongue tag. It follows the format: XXXXXXX-XXX (7 digits, hyphen, 3 digits). Google this code — the Nike website or StockX should return the exact shoe in the exact colorway. If the code returns nothing, or returns a different shoe, it's fake.
Step 2 — Inspect the Swoosh Stitching
On authentic Nikes, the Swoosh is stitched flat against the upper with zero puckering. Replica manufacturers struggle with this — look for uneven thread tension, slight rippling along the Swoosh edge, or thread colour that doesn't exactly match. Under natural light, the difference is usually visible. Under the artificial lighting of a market stall, it's not.
Step 3 — Sole Flex and Air Unit
Flex the sole. Authentic Nike soles have consistent, deliberate flex points engineered for a specific foot movement. Replica soles are often stiffer or collapse unevenly. On Air-cushioned shoes (Air Force 1, Air Max, Air Jordan), the Air bubble should be clearly visible, centred, and symmetrical. Poorly manufactured fakes have off-centre bubbles or visible air pockets at the wrong locations.
Step 4 — Box and Receipt
Authentic Nike boxes have a consistent label with the style code, size, and country of manufacture. "Made in Vietnam" or "Made in Indonesia" are common and authentic. "Made in China" on a Nike that isn't specifically a factory-authorised production run is a red flag. The shoe in the box should match the label exactly — including colorway description.
